Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.

From eye contact to pretend play, these are just a few ways health experts screen children for autism. “It’s based on the age, the things that we try to do. It usually involves stacking blocks, pointing to pictures in a book and labeling pictures in a book, pretend play, such as playing with a baby doll. Then we talk to the child. We check the eye contact. With autism we don’t always have a lot of eye contact,” explained Sherri Campbell, a pediatric advanced provider with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

Sherri and her team hold autism screenings every month throughout Lee County. “What’s really nice about this screening s there are no strings attached. We don’t need a doctor’s order; parents can just show up, we give them a piece of paper, we don’t send any information to any other place. They can decide what they want to do,” said Campbell.

I made this video to show the behaviors my ASD son displayed throughout the years. These classic autism symptoms were the clues that lead to us diagnosing and embracing his autism. Intervention has been so crucial for us to overcome the obstacles in communication and learning. Everyday, we are seeing our son make so many improvements in the areas he use to struggle in.

Autism is a disorder that is usually diagnosed in early childhood. The main signs and symptoms of autism involve communication, social interactions and repetitive behaviors.

Children with autism might have problems talking with you, or they might not look you in the eye when you talk to them. They may spend a lot of time putting things in order before they can pay attention, or they may say the same sentence again and again to calm themselves down. They often seem to be in their "own world."

Because people with autism can have very different features or symptoms, health care providers think of autism as a "spectrum" disorder. Asperger syndrome is a milder version of the disorder.

The cause of autism is not known. Autism lasts throughout a person's lifetime. There is no cure, but treatment can help. Treatments include behavior and communication therapies and medicines to control symptoms. Starting treatment as early as possible is important.

It’s a developmental disorder that can be recognized in early childhood. Doctors say there is treatment for autism that can offer many children a normal life.

Dr. Denise Dutchak, a child psychiatrist with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, says autism is a developmental spectrum disorder. It’s made up of a consolation of symptoms, including difficulty with communication, social interaction, and compulsive behaviors. “They can also have what we call stereotypical behaviors. One of them might be spinning in place or hand flapping.”

Symptoms can start in early childhood as young as two years old. “Parents and pediatricians will recognize it early on even before two years of age, depending on how they’re communicating and how they’re interacting,” said Dr. Dutchak.

While autism is a lifelong condition, treatments are available to help children work on their speech, language, social skills, and cognitive development. “They can learn social skills, they can communicate. They can become involved in jobs, have families, and they can function in the main stream,” said Dr. Dutchak.

Doctors say for the treatment to be beneficial, it has to be coordinated with school and home. “It’s essential that they...

People who fall into the high functioning portion of the spectrum often live lives just like anyone else who's not on the spectrum. They are said to be higher functioning cognitively than others on the spectrum.
SYMPTOMS:
Just like anyone on the Autism Spectrum high functioning people can still struggle with communication, making eye contact, and socially interact overall. Since interacting with others can be so difficult, those who are high functioning often report feeling very anxious prior to a social gathering, and being wiped out afterward because it takes SO much energy to engage with others.
Anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder & depression are the most common comorbidities with HFA, and research shows that OCD and HFA commonly occur together because they both are affected by any abnormalities in a person’s serotonin production. Based on that information we could conclude that all comorbidities can be caused and affected by serotonin changes. I also believe that because people with HFA are more aware of their differences from others they could feel anxious about interacting with people or even depressed about their struggle to connect. Sometimes having insight and awareness into our own...

This is Louise, and she has a very unusual condition: she’s autistic. That can’t be true, you might say – autistic people can’t tell their stories. Well, the funny thing is, she didn’t know she had it until two years ago, and she just thought she was a socially awkward weirdo. This is the story of her life.

Louise always knew she was strange. She has quite a normal family, and although they love her a lot, she has always been a black sheep. She hails from a working neighborhood of a small town. Her relatives are all pretty down-to-earth people, God bless them, while she grew up a dreamer. She invented her own imaginary world where she retreated to from reality – which for unknown reasons, she didn’t like from the very beginning. This is how she earned the nickname of Lou the Dreamer.

She was the youngest child, and everyone in her family was really protective and caring. She now understands that the fact that she was always self-absorbed in her own thoughts, and didn’t respond to their love, was a major warning sign that should have bothered them. But in their community, no one was really that well-informed about psychological disorders, so they just thought that...

Autism affects 1 in 110 children. The majority are boys. Symptoms may show up before the age of two. The extent can vary greatly but the approach to treatment should be the same.

"The highest potential we think is going to be made by the kids that get the treatment early on," says Sherri Campbell nurse practitioner with The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.

Determining the type of social disorder is crucial, from a severe, classic autism to the milder Asperger's syndrome.

"Under the autism spectrum disorder one of the subcategories is Asperger's syndrome that's the one that I think is often missed early on," says Campbell.

A distinguishing feature between the two is speech.

"Asperger's syndrome there is no speech delay so those are the kids that really might look a little odd with their behaviors or social skills but they really move along nicely in school sometimes and are age appropriate with their development but they just have some socialization issues," says Campbell.

Classic autism is linked to late speech and less developed social skills.

"If I was really looking for some issues I would look for a lack of eye...
