In this video I show you my first home made robot arm.
One day I decided I wanted to create a robot arm and start building it from scrats.
I used no special tools, just a Hacksaw, drill and a few files.

- Entirely made of aluminum
- All pivots are ball bearings

A new robotics course in the school of computer science is teaching first year students to build and program autonomous mobile robots. The lab-based nature of the course deviates from traditional lecture-style courses by allowing students to learn quickly during the two hands-on lab sessions per week. The feedback from students indicates that this new kind of teaching environment is a refreshing and exciting change from the longer classroom lectures to which they are accustomed. The course strengthens a student's first year programming and debugging skills through experimentation with motors, gears and various sensors. Students construct a variety of robotic designs, program them to accomplish simple tasks and then observe how they interact with other robots in the same environment. A second course is planned for the fall of 2013 which will focus on more complex programming tasks.

Pancake day special!

The video shows a Barrett WAM robot learning to flip pancakes by reinforcement learning. The motion is encoded in a mixture of basis force fields through an extension of Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) that represents the synergies across the different variables through stiffness matrices. An Inverse Dynamics controller with variable stiffness is used for reproduction.

For pancake day special, the skill is first demonstrated via kinesthetic teaching, and then refined by Policy learning by Weighting Exploration with the Returns (PoWER) algorithm. After 50 trials, the robot learns that the first part of the task requires a stiff behavior to throw the pancake in the air, while the second part requires the hand to be compliant in order to catch the pancake without having it bounced off the pan.

I always wanted to build something like this but it wasn't until I saw the video of the chair building robot by Akiyuki that I got inspired to do it. I used his clever design for the wrist mechanics as a start and then built the rest from scratch.

The "5DOF" in the title refers to "five degrees of freedom (of movement)" which in this case is accomplished through five separate motors. NXT motors do not remember their position, so at startup the robot must figure out where each motor is, re-position it to a neutral location, and then reset the tachometer. This robot self-calibrates itself quickly by using all the motors concurrently.

This was my first use of leJOS (a Mindstorms Java kernel) and I have to say I'm never going back to NXT-G! This was also my first time networking multiple NXTs. This robot can use either an RS485 (wireless) connection or Bluetooth (wireless). In this video the NXTs are communicating over Bluetooth.

I ended up writing some elegant code that allows me to move the robot into any position with a smooth, timed, coordinated movement of all five motors. This was complicated slightly by the fact that modifying the wrist pitch affects the wrist roll due to the gearing so you always have to...

Our reconfigurable modular manipulator (RMM), developed under funding from NASA, uses a Universal Mating Adapter (UMA) for internal power and communications. This allows the building of a 1-DOF to N-DOF manipulator in minutes by combing individual pitch and roll joints. Each joint contains its own power and control electronics, failsafe brake, and absolute and relative optical encoders. All power and data cables pass through the joints internally, avoiding potential snags of external cables. The joints are "hot-swappable" and contain all configuration, calibration, and park information in non-volatile memory. The final joint is equipped with an "auto-detach" device, which allows it to engage or disengage with different end-effectors... or with a payload that is equipped with a UMA plug.
