Building confidence, developing extreme focus, getting that "never-give-up" attitude, becoming aggressive when you need to....these are all mental skills you can learn just like physical skills.

For the life of me, I don't understand why athletes and other performers totally get it that they have to practice their sport or vocation in order to improve but they somehow think that you are born with natural mental abilities or not.

You can learn mental toughness just like any physical skill. In this video, are the 5 basic skills that help you play to your potential.

My coaches work with me and have come to the conclusion that it's mental because physically, I am in shape for the sport and have the skills and ability to be great! I think it’s about the fear of letting others down."

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy argues that "power posing" -- standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident -- can boost feelings of confidence, and might have an impact on our chances for success. (Note: Some of the findings presented in this talk have been referenced in an ongoing debate among social scientists about robustness and reproducibility. Read Amy Cuddy's response here: http://ideas.ted.com/inside-the-debate-about-power-posing-a-q-a-with-amy-cuddy/)

Welcome to the Mental Toughness Academy for Youth Sports. This video is the next segment of a series of trainings for coaches to learn how to learn how to teach mental toughness to their athletes.

How Athletes Use Mental Training To Build Confidence

Today we are going to talk about the benefits of athlete's learning mental training so they can build confidence. To begin with forget the idea that confidence must be obtained from success. It can be, but it's not required. If your athletes feel it has to derive from recent accomplishments, it shuts them down from achieving confidence.

I've heard many coaches in the sports world say the only way to gain confidence is to have success. It is best to remind them that they came out of the womb with no success and were able to create amazing outcomes for themselves. That belief definitely does not help your kids who haven't had any accomplishments yet.

While you're young and you begin learning to walk, because you really want it. That's all that was needed for success. Get them on board that way. That's all...

Join Always in our epic battle to keep girls' confidence high during puberty and beyond. Using #LikeAGirl as an insult is a hard knock against any adolescent girl. And since the rest of puberty's really no picnic either, it's easy to see what a huge impact it can have on a girl's self-confidence. Making a start by showing them that doing things #LikeAGirl is an awesome thing!

"In my work as a documentarian, I have witnessed the confidence crisis among girls and the negative impact of stereotypes first-hand," said Lauren Greenfield, filmmaker and director of the #LikeAGirl video. "When the words 'like a girl' are used to mean something bad, it is profoundly disempowering. I am proud to partner with Always to shed light on how this simple phrase can have a significant and long-lasting impact on girls and women. I am excited to be a part of the movement to redefine 'like a girl' into a positive affirmation."

So tell us... what do YOU do #LikeAGirl?

For the past 30 years, Always has been empowering girls globally, bringing puberty education to millions of adolescent girls.

How To Overcome Fear and Anxiety In Sports?

Fear is nothing more than your unconscious mind, which I was talking about before, releasing some chemicals in your body making you feel something. So we need to start breaking down and helping these kids understand what fear is.

Sometimes you're dealing with a kid who is really in the midst of fear and you see in their mind they are totally insecure. Their whole identity is built around being an athlete - a jumper, a runner, or whatever.

They've got this fear, which makes them think their world is coming to an end. But if you were to explain to them, "Listen, John. You know what? You're just experiencing some chemicals right now." They are like, "What?"

Martin Hagger is Professor of Psychology at Curtin University. His areas of expertise are social, health, sport and exercise psychology. He is involved in numerous research projects nationally and internationally with a focus on motivation and behaviour change. He is currently leading projects in drugs in sport, promoting physical activity and healthy diet, understanding the mechanisms of willpower and self-control, and reducing binge drinking and the prevalence of smoking.

At the highest level, athletes are well-matched in terms of their physical abilities, conditioning, and skill level. But often that is not enough to win and perform on the biggest of stages like the Olympic games. Developing strategies and techniques to get athletes minds in the best possible condition for optimal performance is increasingly important for sports teams and coaches.

Martin will provide an overview of the kinds of techniques that elite athletes use to prepare psychologically for their sport, give details of the scientific research into these techniques and how they work, and how the techniques might be used by competitive athetes and coaches to maximise performance.
