Simple, easy-to-understand whiteboard animation to help early Elementary-aged children gain an understanding of the way their brains work to recognize and manage their emotions. This is intended as a beginning resource to help children, parents, educators, and those who work with children to encourage mindfulness, empathy, and emotional regulation.

The Hand/Brain Model included in the video is a concept by Dr. Dan Siegel. More information on "Flipping your Lid" and the Hand/Brain model can be found at www.drdansiegel.com. You can check out a great video here: http://youtu.be/vESKrzvgA40.

Dr. Antle brings to our attention the idea that perhaps what is preventing children in developing regions from learning is not the lack of schools, but instead, the inability to self-regulate due to experienced traumas. She explains how the headset and app technology she developed teaches children how to self-regulate and how this has, and will, have a profound influence on how children are able to learn across all parts of the world.

Dr. Antle pushes the boundaries of computation to expand the ways we think and learn. As a designer and builder of interactive technologies, her goal is to explore the way in which these innovations can improve, augment, and support children’s development. Her interactive technologies have been deployed to facilitate collaborative learning about aboriginal heritage, sustainability and social justice; improve learning outcomes for dyslexic children; and teach self-regulation to disadvantaged children.

Self-regulation theory (SRT) is a system of conscious personal management that involves the process of guiding one's own thoughts, behaviors, and feelings to reach goals. Self-regulation consists of several stages, and individuals must function as contributors to their own motivation, behavior, and development within a network of reciprocally interacting influences.

Roy Baumeister, one of the leading social psychologists who have studied self-regulation, claims it has four components: standards of...

Teaching kids to have self control is one of the most important character traits we can teach. Experts believe that kids who master self-regulation become masters of their learning, are more critical thinkers, and make healthier choices; and the benefits are life-long.

As parents, I am sure we have observed that little kids have very minimal self-regulation and older kids have some! We adults have developed this self-regulation over time. While it is something that develops as we mature, should we leave the ability to self-regulate up to nature alone, or is there something we could do at home to help kids develop or strengthen this important skill? Some exciting research says self-regulation is something kids can learn. And the best part? It can be taught through play.

This clip is from the 3-part DVD series, Social and Emotional Development of Infants and Toddlers.
"Self-regulation is involved in all aspects of life. As children develop self-control and learn to regulate emotions, behaviors, and attention, they become more independent and competent - both personally and socially.

People need to be able to react to changing events, but also to regulate their reactions. Getting upset by things that are upsetting is useful when it motivates people to try to make things better. Staying upset or carrying negative emotions around for long periods of time can be destructive. Mobilizing efforts to explore a new problem or situation is very important and useful. Staying mobilized to the point of exhaustion and collapse is unhealthy.

Adaptation and development require reaction and regulation. Infants and young children are often good at the reaction part, but need help with the regulation. In early development, regulation is linked to children's relations with others. The job of parents, teachers, and other
caregivers is to provide the experiences that allow children to take over and self-regulate in one aspect of their lives after another.

As they care for infants, parents act as extensions of...

HOW DO YOU IMPROVE SELF-REGULATION:

- Self-regulation is learned during everyday activities and interactions with others. Young children learn to regulate their thinking, behaviour and emotions.

- Children who engage in intentional self-regulation are able to learn more easily. You can help your child to remain in a calm, alert state by having a predictable routine.

- Routines are very important in order for your child to remain regulated. You should create a schedule to help your child predict what will come next. It is best to always start and end each activity, such as going to sleep, in the same way. Your child will start to predict the next step and participate in your routine.

- Routines to focus on include sleep, feeding and toileting.

- As a parent you can help your child by co-regulating. If you remain in a calm alert state, it will help your child to match your behaviour.

- You can also help your child by learning about his sensory preferences. If your child seeks out movement by running and jumping, you can integrate this sensory preference into your daily routine to help your child remain...

The title I Am Borderline, is based off of a campaign created By Betsy Usher and Wright Institute Los Angeles. The campaign's goal is to help reduce the stigma of BPD by asking individuals who identify with the BPD diagnosis to post pictures of themselves showing all of the other talents, labels, and thoughts about who they are. (Ex: I am a teacher). Being diagnosed with BPD does not mean that is all you are, it is only a label.

Jonathan Bricker's work has uncoved a scientifically sound approach to behavior change that is twice as effective as most currently practiced methods. His new methods are driving new norms and new apps for how people quit smoking and decrease obesity, saving many people from an early death.

Jonathan Bricker is an internationally recognized scientific leader in a bold approach called acceptance and commitment therapy. A Stanford researcher called his use of the approach “a breakthrough in behavioral research [that] has major public health implications for the major causes of preventable death.” Bricker and his team, having received $10 million in total federal research grants to study this topic, are rigorously testing this intervention on multiple platforms, including smartphone apps, websites, and telephone coaching. His SmartQuit app for quitting smoking was recently launched and is now in distribution worldwide.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
