This is one of my favourite songs in Irish ever - or in any other language, come to that.

I first heard it in Dungarvan about 10 years ago. The singer, solo and singing without any accompaniment, was a surprisingly young (late teens - early twenties) lady from Connemara.

That they are being learned and sung by a new and vigorous generation is one of the remarkable things about Ireland's tradition of singing the grand old songs in Irish: solo and unaccompanied was the traditional way,

Now those old songs being taken up by young people - such as the members of the all female group, 'Líadan' (http://www.liadan.ie/).

These younger, almost 'new wave' exponents of some of Ireland's most loved songs, moving away from the old 'sean nós' (old style) tradition of solo unaccompanied singing are bringing them to a new audience, to young and to old, to Irish people and to our newly acquired friends overseas.

The songs they sing, of course, in the way of folk songs the world over, deal with life, with love, with death.

Listening to Líadan singing this remarkable song reminds me of Wordsworth's tribute to a young lady singing something in Scottish Gaelic that could have been in the...

Oran gu math sgoineal is brònach agus tha guth aig Ishbel binn is laider. Ach chan eil an t-oran seo ach air teip cassette(Lèodhas mo ghràdh) agus chan eil an e air CD sam bidh- is bochd sin. Budh toigh leam mar a bha e. Tha seist aon an fear seo nach eil ann clar eile. Tha sin:

"Dìobradh damh a mharg 'san fhrìth,
Dìobradh eala h-ealg fhìn,
Dìobradh mathair rùn a chridh'
's mi gun dàimh, gun ghaol gun dionadh"

"As a deer abandoning it's fawn in the deer forest,
As a swan deserting its young
As a mother forsaking her beloved child,
So I am left friendless, unloved,
and unprotected"

This is such a wonderful song and Ishbel's version here is the best. Her voice makes it haunting in its beauty. Unfortunately the only recording of her singing it that I know of is on a cassette tape "Leòdhas mo ghràdh". It has not been put onto CD - that I know of unfortunately,. She sings a verse here (see above) that is not in any other version of this song that is recorded.

Note for those who know no Gaelic - "Iain ruadh" (red Iain) refers to complexion, as in red haired.

We are four Bostonians who perform celtic folk music from
Nova Scotia. We all have at least one parent from Nova Scotia and spent lots of time there growing up. We also embrace being from Boston and have been influenced by the rich Irish traditions of our area.

Our fiddler Doug Lamey is the grandson of Boston Cape
Breton fiddling legend Bill Lamey. He's been playing
since he was a kid and has studied with some of the
greats from both the Cape Breton tradition (Buddy
MacMaster) and Irish fiddle scene (Tommy Peoples).

We are lucky to have two of the best stepdancers in
the Boston area, Pam Campbell and Christine Morrison.
Pam is the daughter of fiddling legend John Campbell.
Christine is the daughter of Peggy Morrison who is
president of the Gaelic Club in Watertown, MA.

Pam & Christine have been dancing together for 16 years and have shared the stage with Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac to drop some names.

I sing in both English and Scottish Gaelic. I
play guitar and Irish Tin whistle and make my living as a
musician/storyteller. I am steeped in Irish music on my dads side of the family (Clifford's in...

Taken from the album 'Cànan nan Gàidheal'-the Language of the Gael (1987, reissued in 1993).
Performed by Catherine-Ann McPhee.
Written and composed by Murdo MacFarlane (Murchadh MacPharlain, Bard Mealbhoist) in the 1970s. This is one version of several existing.
It is a very well-known song of Gaelic Pride, especially in the language.

Lyrics:

Cha b'e sneachda 's an reòthadh bho thuath
Cha b'e 'n crannadh geur fuar bho 'n ear
Cha b'e 'n t-uisge 's a'ghaillionn bho 'n iar
Ach an galair a bhlian bho 'n deas
Blàth, duilleach, stoc, agus freumh
Cànan mo threubh 's mo shluaidh

Sèist:
Thig thugainn, thig cò'ruim gu siar
Gus an cluinn sinn ann cànan nam Féinn
Thig thugainn, thig cò'ruim gu siar
Gus an cluinn sinn ann cànan nan Gàidheal

Nuair chithear fear-fèilidh'sa ghleann
Bu chinnteach gur Gàidhlig a' chainnt
Nuair a spion iad a threumh as an fhonn
'N àite Gàidhlig tha cànan a ghoill
'S a Ghaidhealtachd creadhal-nan-sonn
'S tìr "Mhajors" is "Cholonels" 'n diugh innt'

Seinn an duan seo dhan Innis Àigh Sing this song to the Happy Isle
An innis uaine as gile tràigh The green isle of whitest sands
Bidh sian air uairean a' bagairt cruaidh ris Though storms at times threaten severely
Ach se mo luaidh-sa bhith ann a' tàmh It is where I love to be

Càit' as tràith an tig samhradh caomh Where does summer come earlier?
Càit' as tràith an tig blàth air craobh Where do trees come into bloom sooner?
Càit' as bòidhche 's an seinn an smeòrach Where does the thrush sing more sweetly
Air bhàrr nan ògan 's an Innis Àigh On the tips of branches, than in the Happy Isle?

An t-iasg as fiachaile dlùth don tràigh The most prized fish closest to land
Is ann ma chrìochan is miann leis tàmh Wishes to live about its shores
Bidh gillean easgaidh le dorgh is lìontan Lively youths hunt it early in the morning
Moch, moch ga iarriadh mun Innis Àigh With line and net, around the Happy Isle

'S ged thèid mi cuairt chun an taoibh ud thall And although I sometimes go to the mainland
'S mi...

Darren Maclean's traditional Scottish lilting sounds like scat singing or fast rap. He is one of five Scottish singers brought together from a country-wide audition to perform in a new music special led by singer/actress Fiona Kennedy -- former host of "Tartan TV" and a member of Scotland's leading theatrical family.

A sad but very beautiful lullaby. After the execution of the Clan Chief MacGregor of Glenstrae in 1570, his widow composed and sang this lullaby lament to her child. There exist several versions of this song, more commonly heard as Griogal Cridhe (Beloved Gregor). Here is the english translation of the text, originally in Gàidhlig (scottish gaelic):

Oh hush-a-bye, my little baby Hush, my little baby, hush
Oh hush-a-bye, my little baby
My own little baby will go to sleep
Though I am without a flock of sheep
And the others all have sheep
Though I am without a flock of sheep
You, little baby, can go to sleep
Darling, of the people of the great world
They spilt your blood yesterday
They put your head on an oaken post
A little way from your corpse
I breathlessly climbed the great mountain
I climbed and I descended
I would put the hair of my head under your feet
And the skin of my two hands.
